WITH the increased use of pub sites for metro styled shops, I wonder who studied traffic management on the city council, who gave permission for such development without reasonable study.
Take the former Woodman public house in Coxford Road, situated right on the worst corner in the city.
The traffic leaving the site meets the traffic coming into the site right on top of the traffic lights, traffic leaving Coxford Road meets traffic coming into the same road with parking of cars on the other side. Absolute chaos?
All aggravated by traffic coming from lower Coxford Road and the residents of Lordshill trying to get out. It doesn’t help by having cars parked up all day by the hospital workers, who now seem to have taken over Dunkirk Road and car parks too.
As there is only one exit from the Woodman site and the only other exit would have been Lordswood Road which, however, is blocked by bollards. That could be used if drivers synchronised with the traffic lights, except of course when it is blocked with heavy lorries unloading provisions (when half the car park is closed).
The result of all this means that Dunkirk Road is used as a rat run, which is going to mean a danger to the users of the Sports Centre.
Also, when a special event is on and dog walkers use it, there is going to one day be the inevitable accident. I suggest that sleeping policemen or some other speed device is fitted to Dunkirk Road as a matter of priority.
I understand several sites are now in use and I believe Stoneham Arms in Bassett Green Road, a dangerous bypass of Southampton, is now under consideration.
Who passes such applications? In a lot of cases we do not need any further small supermarkets, as most of them are next door to premises selling the same goods.
So why?
ALAN BLANDFORD. Lordswood.
