MANY visitors to Southampton are often seen taking pictures of the Bargate, Southampton’s iconic monument of continuity through the ages, and must enjoy this wonderful historic treasure.
But sooner or later the beautiful coats of arms which have adorned the northern gateway will be lost for the city’s future generations to see.
Why have these crests of our local heritage been allowed to deteriorate?
They need urgent attention in the way of reprinting and refurbishment to add to the colour and splendour of the Bargate.
If Southampton City Council or a local historical society cannot undertake this simple task how are we to see Southampton become a cultural city in Europe?
