ONE hears a lot about the shortcomings of the NHS, so may I through your newspaper thank the staff at Southampton General Hospital for the care and attention I received during my recent visit to remove a tumour.

From the diagnosis (picked up by the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme), tests that were carried out by various hospital departments, the specialist, HDU and ward E5 nurses, the surgical team, cleaners and caterers, nothing was to much trouble and a very nervous patient was made to feel safe, secure and cared for.

Thank you PS: The operation was carried out on a Friday afternoon!

IAN CROSS, West Wellow.
