IN RESPONSE to the letter ‘Sad working pensioner can’t use bus concession’: I am that working pensioner and I wasn’t complaining about not being able to use a pass, but merely pointing out that not all pensioners use concessionary passes.
I work, so I think it’s only fair that I should pay my way.
I don’t think you should be commenting on the fact that I am still working. Not everyone has a choice to give up work directly when they reach retirement age and, without knowing my circumstances you can’t really comment.
I would love to be able to give up work; after all, I am one of those people who have worked all their lives and paid taxes etc, never claiming any benefits, so I think I am entitled to take it a bit easy now.
Unfortunately, the state pension doesn’t really give a decent standard of living, it is just an existence.
My private work pension (which I have paid into) doesn’t pay out until I am 65. I still have a mortgage to pay, which I couldn’t afford on the state pension so I have accepted that I will have to carry on working until the mortgage is paid or I get my private pension, whichever happens first.
So please stop the sarcastic comments as you don’t know the full story.
