Interesting to see in the “Your Say” section in the Echo that the youngsters seem unconcerned about the possible future shortages of electricity; I’d like to remind them that their laptops, tablets and iPhones have batteries lasting only about 12 hours.
The problem is, it’s too late to fill the gap in supply quickly. Wind and solar are pretty useless for constant supply, wave power has not proved viable in the last 40 years or so in which trials have been carried out, and the only suggestion for tidal power has been rejected by the greenies.
Which leaves gas – again not very green – and nuclear. At long last permission has been granted for a nuclear station at Hinkley Point, after such a long time of shilly-shallying due to the opposition of Lib Dems, especially the ex-energy minister Chris Hune. This will take some time to get into commission, however, so get stocked up with candles and camp stoves before the cold weather.
ROGER BAKER, Blackfield.
