IS the forced green issue more important than public safety?
In my opinion, the new street lighting lenses are sighted too high and do not emit enough light.
To add insult to injury, our councils are seemingly embarking on a programme of cutting the light output.
They say this is saving thousands of pounds on running costs and maintaining our carbon footprint, which is nonsense.
Congratulations to Soapbox: Potholes writer (Letters, June 24, “Proper road repair job too much to ask . . .?”) who explained correctly what is happening to our roads and infrastructure (lack of investment).
As for Richard Grant’s “What need for late lighting?” (Letters, June 24), why we need lighting is for people who work nights using our roads and streets. Life does not stop at night.
Too much investment is being centred on this ‘green agenda’ which is not proven.
If the lighting was reduced on the motorways roads would be even more dangerous.
This is a false economy if people’s lives are at risk.
This government’s idea of using hard shoulders on motorways is frightening.
We need these shoulders for the emergency services and breakdown recovery.
