REGARDING the comment section in a recent Daily Echo (which I get delivered daily) about bus services in Southampton, I am absolutely appalled by the changes that have been made in Upper Shirley and Lordswood to the services that are now provided.
Until June 30 there were three buses available to residents of these areas. Now there is only one, namely the S1 service which is supposed to run hourly between 10.06 am until 3.06pm.
This bus is on average at least 18 minutes late.
There are many elderly and disabled people that use this service and cannot wait at stops with no seating/or shelter.
First Bus tendered for this service and receives a subsidy from Southampton City Council.
Other companies also tendered but First Bus were the cheapest.
I would like to know why Millbrook estate get so many buses per hour while Lordswood and Upper Shirley receive so few.
I am a pensioner with medical problems and unable to walk a great distance. Also in Upper Shirley and Lordswood there are no buses whatsover on a Sunday which virtually makes people housebound.
I believe this is discrimination for certain areas when we are supposed to be environmentally healthy and not use our cars!
I don’t own a car and am not wealthy enough to use taxis.
I pay council tax and have worked all my life but I now feel the scrap heap is the only thing left for me!
JUDI MILNE, Shirley, Southampton.
