AFTER reading in the Southern Daily Echo about the chaos caused by buckling tracks due to excessive heat, I feel rail companies should now hold up their hands and admit that they were wrong to switch to welded rails from the traditional gap type, which allowed the metal to expand without the risk of buckling during extremely hot weather conditions.

The misery caused to passengers by closed sections of track and greatly reduced speeds has been immense and will not go away unless they revert to proven methods.

There is more to running an efficient rail system than trains painted in pretty colours and staff wearing flashy uniforms, so you never know the clickety-clack sound of the wheels passing over the track may yet be heard again in the not too distant future.

Old fashioned, maybe, but at least trouble-free and safe.
