ONE of the stallholders from the German market was attacked by four men on November 27. They didn't succeed in getting his takings, but they gave him a thorough beating, resulting in a broken leg, broken ribs and other injuries, while shouting racial abuse. He now faces returning to Germany for operations, and being unable to work for six months.

This makes me ashamed to be English.

The market workers are a lovely bunch of people, who have shown me and my friends nothing but friendship when I see them on their stalls, or when they drink in my pub. I am hoping to visit them in Germany in the summer, and I'm sure I will thoroughly enjoy myself.

I can only apologise to them for the appalling behaviour of some of my countrymen. Shame on them and their cowardly actions!
