ONCE again Richard Grant, of Burley, trots out scaremongering nonsense about “millions of jobs at risk if Britain leaves the EU” (letter, April 5). We had enough of that monotonous drone from Nick Clegg in the two TV debates, desperately trying to create a climate of fear.
Clegg’s bogus argument rests on the absurd claim that our trade with Europe suddenly stops if we rid ourselves of federal control by Brussels.
Tell that to the French vintners, the German car manufacturers and the Italian fashion houses, who cannot afford to lose the UK as a customer.
We would retain our membership of EFTA, the European Free Trade Area, and, as Sir Digby Jones (former head of the CBI) has said, if Britain left the EU tomorrow, we would have a new trade agreement within 24 hours.
The Lib-Dems once promoted their belief that we must join the single currency or see our economy collapse. And to think that Nick Clegg was accusing Nigel Farage of “dangerous fantasy”!
