I READ your article regarding the new leisure site at West Quay, Southampton (Daily Echo, April 10),and quite frankly I just despair.
What is wrong with these planners and what are they thinking?
Why oh why do we need another cinema? We already have Leisure World and Harbour Lights, Eastleigh’s the Vue is not much further away. A “luxury” cinema! You just need a comfortable seat to sit in, for goodness’ sake. And what extortionate prices will they be charging? It’s already very expensive at normal cinemas.
More restaurants? We have plenty already, ones of every nationality going!
How about doing something for the children and teenagers of Southampton? They seem to be forgotten about. Children are not getting enough exercise and stay indoors too much.
Let’s have an ice rink again and get these obese children fit.
It also gives them somewhere to go and meet their friends and exercise at the same time and maybe stop them from getting bored and into trouble because they do not have enough places to go.
What about a really nice park to sit in, as well, with the water features they are talking about and something for the younger children.
All these big tower blocks that are being built are the most ugly things eg the student accommodation next to The Mayflower theatre – what a monster. It looks awful and is not in keeping with the rest of the surrounding buildings, very drab looking and overpowering.
Then there are all the big buildings down Below Bar where Telephone House used to be – all overpowering, it just looks terrible.
I was born and bred in Southampton and I have to say it’s not a nice place to live any more. I now want to move away from the city to a nicer place.
I don’t suppose these planners would reconsider what they are proposing to do and do something for the future generation of young children? I guess they are only interested in making lots of money.
SUE CAPLEN, Southampton.
