WITH regard to the proposed lasers, I can't imagine visitors from far and wide being attracted here like moths to a candle, a helter-skelter around the clock tower might be a better alternative.
I can recall one attraction at the Marlands Park, circa 1928. It was a tall vertical ladder topped by a platform and at the bottom was a not very large tank of water, it's purpose was to publicise the arrival of Jacob Studtz travelling circus.
At an appointed time a man with one leg proceeded to climb the ladder with surprising agility (rumour had it that he was formerly the circus lion tamer!) and was followed by an assistant carrying a blazing torch.
On arriving at the platform the performer donned a package of some sort which was then ignited by the torch bearer, whereupon the human fireball did a spectacular header into the water tank which itself became a mass of flame for a while. That really was a crowd puller so councillors, Any volunteers? - no need for an amputation!
