I congratulate Tom McNulty on his achievement and do not wish to in any way detract from it, but I believe that readers might be interested to learn that the first totally blind person to climb Sydney Harbour Bridge spent his early years in Winchester, before his English parents emigrated to Australia about 27 years ago.
Andrew Mortimer, who is now 31, was blinded in an accident when he was 15, but despite this went to Sydney University, although he was brought up in faraway Adelaide, where his parents continue to live.
As an undergraduate he was the first blind person to be allowed to climb the bridge after public access was first permitted some ten years ago.
