THE incongruity of R Grant’s suggestion (Letters, August 9) that Councillor David Harrison should stand for John Denham’s seat in 2015 shows that politically he has completely lost the plot.
He proposes the man who canvassed every house in The Waterside (he says) to prevent the port development at Dibden Bay on land owned by the Port Authority.
The man who claimed he had found not one person in favour despite letters to the contrary, by Watersiders, in the Echo.
A massive blow to Southampton’s economy.
The councillor who criticises Southampton’s air pollution policy when a huge proportion of it comes over Redbridge Causeway from The Watersiders every day.
The councillor who fails to mention the closure of the monitoring station at Fawley in his own area. The councillor whose Lib-Dem party reneged on their policy of no increase in university fees. Southampton has two universities; this was another blow to its economy.
With active Lib-Dem support since 2010, the wealth of the top 1,000 has doubled to £519 billion, whilst by 2015 earnings by the working class will have fallen more than any time since 1974-1980, and the gap is widening at an ever greater rate.
We now have 420 food banks and Barnardo reports 3½ million kids living in poverty. The bedroom tax, the zero hours contracts, just a few of a list of many more irrefragable, splenetic, cruel measures the Lib- Dems have actively supported.
With a representative like David Harrison, Southampton would need no other enemies. To ask us to vote for him is like asking a turkey to vote for Christmas.
The signs suggest that come next May the Lib-Dem turkey will be plucked and stuffed. I suggest, Mr R Grant, before making any more suggestions you lie down in a dark room with a cold compress on your head.
D R SMITH, Southampton.
