A COUPLE of years ago I visited the Portuguese Atlantic Islands of the Azores.
The roads were so smooth and well kept, not a pothole in sight.
On asking the guide how they could maintain such good roads when their main income is from exporting pineapples and a growing tourist industry, she replied: “Thanks to funds from the EU”.
Maybe it’s time we asked for a generous stash of cash (as we certainly hand over enough) from the EU to radically improve our dreadful potholed roads.
