As a charity dedicated to improving the opportunities and lives of disabled people, we would like to respond to the news story regarding Ashley X, who is severely disabled.
Enham believes that disabled people should be accepted by society and that this is a fundamental human right.
We support advances in medical science, whereby genuine improvement to a person's quality of life would result.
We acknowledge the dilemma faced by the parents in this case, however, with the right social care and support for the family, the medical alterations administered could have been viewed as unnecessary.
Despite recent progress, the case of Ashley X illustrates the ongoing fragility of the rights and status of disabled people in society.
Enham believes all people should be respected for their own unique qualities.
MIKE SMITH, chief executive.
