WITH reference to recent articles on parking of parents’ cars at Fairisle School, this is not an isolated problem, it happens at schools of all ages, all over Southampton/Hampshire, and most of them sort it out themselves, without any moans and groans.
This is not a problem that will go away. In fact it is only going to get worse. Schools and intakes are getting larger, but areas around schools are becoming smaller, i.e. loss of green areas, overdevelop-ment of housing, etc.
So what are the options? The parents must take the blame for a lot of the car parking. They spoil their children and take them to school, as near as possible, at any time, all the year round, sun, rain, sleet or hail.
Why don’t they walk their children to school? Exercise does everyone good, and does a lot to keep you fit, all that lovely fresh air. If parents live, say, within a one-mile radius from the school, don’t use the car.
Parking of cars at the school area could be stopped.
Parking is only needed for half an hour in the morning and afternoon.
Why not park in Sainsbury’s car park – two hours’ free parking – then walk to school?
You have to feel sorry for the local residents. Years ago, when the school was a lot smaller, there were not these problems.
On some of the points made above, the council and/or the school could meet together, to sort this out, and hope to find a solution.
