ON November 11 we will remember the contribution and sacrifices made by those who, during times of war, gave their life for peace and freedom.

This year has special significance as it marks the centenary of the start of the First World War and the 70th anniversary of D-Day – providing a unique opportunity to honour the debt owed to veterans.

With more than 30,000 military personnel in Hampshire, the largest contingent in the country, Hampshire County Council is immensely proud of its strong connections with the armed forces.

The welfare services from the Royal British Legion are as important as ever for these forces, their families, those making the transition to civilian life and for veterans.

Every poppy sold goes towards the £1.7m a week spent on a variety of services, from helping a young widow through an inquest to ensuring that an older veteran can stay independent in his home.

Over nine million people are eligible to approach the Poppy Appeal for support.

We’ll be placing poppies within our premises again this year to help raise these much-needed funds.

Please buy a poppy, wear it with pride to show how very proud we are of all those who have given their life, and for the service men and women who continue to bravely protect and serve our country.

ROY PERRY, leader, Hampshire County Council.
