TO ensure the survival of garden birds, wildlife trusts ask us to feed them through the winter.
Meanwhile contractors have been instructed to strim verges.
This action, by removing plants that have seeded eg thistle heads, may appear nice and tidy to some people but it deprives many birds like sparrows and finches of their winter food stocks.
The above picture, taken earlier this week, shows the verge by the car park opposite Woolston Jetty stripped of its resources for wildlife.
