THE conduct of our service personnel in the Iran hostage incident was both disgraceful and shameful and has indelibly stained the reputation of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.
This was from the outset a matter which was going to be resolved by diplomacy between the British and Iranian authorities. The only point at issue was how long before the hostages were released.
Having been captured, name, rank and number and a dignified and courageous silence should have been the only information they provided the Iranian authorities.
The speed with which they complied with their captors' demands, response to their stage-managed release and selling their story to the media is an utter disgrace and humiliation for them, the nation and to the memory of those who served before them with greater discipline, honour and valour.
