THE STORY concerning rubbish found on the mud flats of the River Itchen (Daily Echo, April 12) did not surprise me.
This is the kind of society we live in, we learn to expect this kind of behaviour, although we are disgusted by it.
Wherever one goes in our countryside we encounter fly-tipping of one sort or another.
We have a similar problem here in Lordswood with Tanners Brook always littered with shopping trolleys and no end of people-s cast-off rubbish, to say nothing of the burnt out motor vehicles strewn around the woodland.
Of course, the local council has a big problem on their hands and things will not get any better until some of the culprits are caught and made an example of in our courts instead of the usual list of motorists being fined for driving a couple of miles over the limit.
I thought the council had recently taken on extra litter wardens, well this is litter at its worst so who is doing the job?
I would suggest regular patrols in some of the more out of the way areas with two or more wardens (the men) to report back to a control unit with a rapid action team ready to move immediately.
I would also suggest that every decent citizen do their bit and report all acts of this nature with photographic proof if possible without causing danger to themselves, (such things as vehicle number plates etc).
Only then with everyone pulling together will we enjoy a smarter, cleaner environment.
