I AM surprised that Raymond Angel (Letters, April 9) ignored my letters of reassurance regarding the unlikely event of engine failure and subsequent loss of ABS braking.
Without ignition, a car isn't going anywhere, on that at least we can agree!
What Mr Angel is getting mixed up with is the difference between the motion of an engine and the running of the same, even with a spark the engine doesn't necessarily have to fire (try running with no fuel!) We are talking about engine failure, there are a number of causes for this, not least and most common the lack of fuel.
What I said in my letter (April 4) was that the forward motion of the vehicle would not allow the engine to stop completely.
What I would be more worried about in such circumstances would be the fear of traffic behind me and how far the motion would allow me to travel to get off the traffic lane, certainly not how well my brakes would work.
If Mr Angel writes to Vauxhall with his fears and gets a reply verifying that their cars, or braking systems, are dangerous, I'll admit I'm wrong and concede defeat. I'll change my job.
A GABRIEL, mechanic, Hythe.
