THE Spitfire was a major factor in winning the Battle of Britain, but Southampton City Council has done nothing to honour the man who designed it.
I suggest a replica of the Spitfire to be placed in front of the Civic Centre, with a statue of R J Mitchell and a memorial plaque for those men and women who lost their lives building this amazing aircraft.
When the German aircraft came to Southampton, the Spitfire works was the number one target. I know because I was there.
