I WAS disappointed to read in the Daily Echo that the Liberal Democrat Cabinet is still to go ahead with the combined heat and power station. Firstly, why use a foreign company? Haven't we learned our lesson from relying on prices and supply from abroad with the gas and electricity companies?
Why transport palm oil half way around the world? This is hardly carbon neutral. Why palm oil anyway?
I am sure many people saw the TV programme recently about the utter destruction of the Malaysian rain forest. This has obliterated the habitats of many creatures, including orang-utans, to produce palm oil for the greedy western world. I am sure they would not want Southampton to contribute to this devastating situation in Malaysia.
Palm oil has been removed from many foods because it is considered carcinogenic.
By all means help 3,000 deprived households in the Millbrook area to improve their homes in other ways, insulation etc.
If a power station of this nature must be built it should be built by this country, managed by this country and use biofuels from this country.
A CRIMBLE, Sholing, Southampton.
