I WAS interested to read the recent Daily Echo article about the sale of Myrtle Cottage, the home of the late Bert Betts.
He was well known for his activities concerning the welfare of Bursledon village as testified by having his name now displayed on a road off the Windover roundabout.
However I met him when he was the engineer in charge of the outside broadcasting unit of Southern Television.
They often required extra power to operate their cameras and lighting and so they called on Southern Electricity Board to help.
As a former SEB employee I did this task. For 15 years or more I used to meet Bert and he would tell me what was required.
We became good friends and Bert would always see that I got a good position to watch the show.
Primarily it involved all the home matches of the Saints at the Dell but there were other shows such as church services, similar to the BBC's Songs of Praise, and later came shows like Dancing Finals at the Top Rank and the Guildhall when sometimes I even took my wife.
The show I will always remember was the celebrations of Saints' winning the FA Cup, which was held at the Guildhall.
I shall miss him.
FRANK SOUTHARD, Botley.
