I WAS interested to read the Daily Echo's recent article headlined Could You Manage Without a Car?

I regularly ride a bike to the city from the outskirts of Southampton. I would not recommend this as a safe means of travel.

Practically all the cycle routes are inadequate. For example, they are not separated from traffic and most cycle paths lead nowhere. I should say no cycle route in Southampton will get anyone from where they live to their place of work.

The cities and towns in this country are not designed for cycling. As for letting my children cycle to school, no chance, it's safer if they walk instead.
