I WOULD like to thank Donald Smith who wrote such an informative In My View column recently regarding the Spitfire. It was fascinating, and certainly strengthened my belief that the Spitfire played a pivotal role in the Second World War.
Like Mr Smith, I was extremely puzzled at the apparent lack of effort to commemorate R J Mitchell and his Spitfire within the city. However, under the recent Liberal Democrat administration, the city council seemed to have at last come to the point of making plans for some kind of memorial.
As suggested on this page recently, this should be our wow factor in the form of a life-sized model permanently displayed at the end of the restored Royal Pier, and elevated at flying height for visitors to access by lift and admire.
This would be our new logo, and our answer and addition to the Spinnaker Tower at Portsmouth and the planned tower in Brighton.
