I RECENTLY watched a programme on BBC2 about the state of the UK's pavements.
The main issue mentioned was the problem caused by chewing gum and should the local government, the consumer or manufacturers be responsible for clearing it up.
I believe that the idea of the manufacturer being responsible for the mess made by the consumer is ridiculous.
However in the future an on- the-spot fine for the consumer may be a reasonable idea, and could help to get rid of the eyesore that is chewing gum-littered streets.
Surely in the meantime, Southampton City Council should invest more money in litter bins, not necessarily in the city centre, but in and around the suburbs.
This would eliminate the majority of chewing gum on our streets and also cigarette ends.
Let's not place all the blame on the people who drop chewing gum, cigarette ends or any litter on the streets, but look to improve the positioning of bins, and put them in more helpful places to help clear litter off our streets and into our bins.
