SINCE I wrote about what I consider to be Channel 4's inconsiderate and distasteful attempt to improve their viewing ratings by showing a programme about the untimely death of Diana, Princess of Wales, two readers have written to comment.

The first said there was nothing sadistic about the programme and I am not in a position to comment on this because I did not watch the programme. It was the thought that the paparazzi who I consider caused the accident, may gain financially that caused me most concern.

That writer also is of the opinion that the driver of the car being three times over the breathalyser limit caused the accident. I dispute this as before the Road Safety Act of circa 1968 many people drove around the streets of London well in excess of this limit without having accidents, but they, of course, were not being pursued by predatory paparazzi, so we will differ in our opinions in this respect.

What does gall me, however, is the writer (Letters, June 23) who justifies the screening of the programme in order to learn the truth about what happened.

All the above facts were known very soon after the event, and unless something very different emerges from the inquest, there is no need to further upset Diana's children. She's dead, let her lie down.
