I am a member of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. I'm not alone. Indeed, I understand that the membership exceeds that of all three major political parties.
Other than providing nesting sites and food, there are three things that would help improve matters, for birds in our gardens. If every cat owner made sure that their pet wore a collar and bell, this would save countless birds.
Secondly, it seems there is a growing trend for people to use mirrors in gardens. Unfortunately, birds often fly into these at speed, resulting in a broken neck.
Lastly, I would urge limited use of slug pellets. The poison is considered responsible for the demise of many birds, including the song thrush.
Just a few easy measures and we can all enjoy a much healthier mix of bird life all around us, COUNCILLOR DAVID HARRISON, Totton.
