Is it really the best use of money (that we have not got) to plonk (a brass replica of a Spitfire) on some city crossroads?

We already have one outside the airport - funded by Germany - and what impact does it have on the casual observer ? Very little - about the same as the Portsmouth "sails" have on passing motorists.

What about a postmark incorporating a depiction of the aircraft together with the message "From the birthplace of the Spitfire"?

This would appear on every letter, postcard and parcel posted within the city and would spread the message throughout the world. Cost, if any, would be minimal. Maybe someone can come up with a better message.
