OBELISK Road, Woolston, has not had an obelisk for some time.

At the end of Obelisk Road, beyond its junction with Victoria Road, is a building site that once was a shipyard. Southampton City Council would like a new visitor attraction. Southampton is famous for its parks.

Putting these things together: could we build an obelisk in a park on the building site? The obelisk could be big to attract visitors. Very big, say 171 metres tall, with the top pyramid being glass over a viewing platform. While the obelisk would be the standard square shape, the base plinth could be multi-sided - one side for each religion represented in Southampton. On the sides would be texts taken from each religion's holy writings, perhaps promoting love and peace. My suggestions would be: From the Qur'an: "And among His signs is this that He created for you mates that ye may dwell in tranquillity with them, and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts)" - chapter 30, verse 21 Qur'an.

From the Hindu Tirukkural: "Without love in the heart, Life is like a sapless tree in a barren desert. What good is a body perfect in outer ways, if inwardly it is impaired by lack of love? With love enshrined in the heart, one lives. Without it, the body is but bone encased in skin."-Tirukkural 8:78-80.

From the New Testament: "Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.'' (2 Corinthians 13: 11).

No doubt, readers could provide other quotations from their scared writings.
