RICHARD May's case against Eastleigh Borough Council's proposals to find other uses for allotment land at South Street which lay derelict because no one wanted it and to provide alternative sites around the borough is precisely the case I presume his association put forward when the council first debated the matter (Letters, July 16).

The council disagreed with them, the matter went to a public inquiry and the council's decision was upheld. They then challenged that decision in the High Court, and lost again when the judge found in the council's favour. The allotment holders had ample opportunity to put their case and cannot complain that they did not have a fair hearing.

As I said in my earlier letter, as the matter is now over and done with further debate of the pros and cons is a waste of time.

As for Mr May's threats that the council's decision will come back to haunt them, who does he think he's kidding? Each year since the decision was made the Liberal Democrats have increased the number of council seats they hold, and this year had their best local election results ever, taking over 50 per cent of the votes cast and winning 13 out of 14 wards.

I am glad that instead of having allotment land lying abandoned there is now a waiting list for plots on the new sites - a total vindication of the council's decision to re-locate them.

One way of reducing that waiting list would be if people with two plots showed a bit of consideration for other people and gave one of them up.
