IT always amazes me how little imagination Southampton City Council and businesses have.
An imaginative idea would immediately give Southampton a wow factor and be a big attraction for tourists. Finance could be obtained from the National Lottery or from private investors.
Every year large tankers and many other vessels are scrapped. My idea would be to buy the bow section of one such ship, and recreate from it the bow and bridge section of Titanic.
I would site it at the front of Mayflower Park facing down water. It would be a permanent memorial to those who set sail from Southampton and a tribute from the city on behalf of the whole nation. It would be of national importance.
I would propose that the remains be set in concrete. The recreated shell of the bridge could become a restaurant/function area that would be the envy of every other port and city in the country.
Within the hull there would be a museum, prestige offices, and areas either for commercial or retail use which would also help finance the scheme.
The rear open end of the hull, which would be facing towards the city could be a massive glazed convex structure that when lit would look amazing.
Every ship that sailed into or out of Southampton would see this fine structure - what a wow factor! Flights into and out of Southampton Airport would see the spectacle.
It would become the prime site for any aspiring or prestige business. The bridge could be sponsored or operated by a large hotel or leisure consortium.
