AS a proud and grateful pupil (1939-1944) of Southampton Grammar School for Girls, I was horrified to hear of the shameful proposals of the destruction of the fine building that has so well served the educational system in Southampton.
Is it really true that £28m is to be squandered on the demolition of the building - now Taunton's College - and replaced by several industrial-type units?
The recent refurbishment was at least added without destruction, and no doubt a sympathetic and intelligent appraisal could result in reforming the attractive façade and well-known clock tower.
I am certain that my sentiments are shared by many ex-pupils (mainly evacuees), more than 150 of whom attended the 50th, 60th and 65th reunions that I instigated from 1989 onwards.
Memories of the school were warmly exchanged on these occasions and pride in the building itself was high on the priority of recollections.
Let those responsible for these unthinkable plans consider very hard the quite appalling process they appear to be so anxious to set in motion. Not only the Grammarians, but all who have received education in Hill Lane, must strive to make their voices and opinions heard by those responsible for this wasteful proposal.
