I GET rather annoyed when Martin Kyrle (Letters, July 7 and 24) appears unable to correlate the facts over the long running Eastleigh allotments controversy.
Overall there will be a net loss of about 1,200 rods (enough for 150 people to be accommodated at the average Eastleigh plot holding of eight rods) if the council persists with its plans also to dispose of the Woodside allotments.
The waiting list is now over 300 with no spare space to accommodate them.
The vacant plots at the new sites are reserved for relocation of plot holders from the three sites earmarked for housing.
Woodside is still threatened. This site was virtually full in 2002, since when a letting ban has been imposed by the council. There are currently approximately 300 rods vacant at Woodside due to the council's ban - this space could accommodate a further 37 people from the waiting list.
The judge at the High Court referred to a "looming crisis'' in Eastleigh with regard to the waiting list.
Throughout the campaign to save the allotments the council and their supporters have continually given the impression that extra allotment land will be available. This is definitely not the case.
BARRY BUNCE, Woodside allotment holder, Eastleigh.
