I AM glad to see that the proposal for a Spitfire memorial is gaining support.

I would like to propose that the site of West Quay Thee into a park to display this memorial and perhaps a second sculpture or mural to Southampton's great liners.

This piece of wasted space would make a lovely park from which to see the liners in Southampton (the photo in last Saturday's paper showing the view from the Navigator of the Seas shows it would also be visible from some ships).

A park here would also provide a great view from the esplanade around West Quay and already has an attractive border formed by the old walls which are also fronted by a row of mature trees.

This park would further provide a link to the old quarter of the town around St Michael's Square, Mayflower Park and the old pier which it would be great to see developed, along with the rest of the waterfront, into a much needed attraction for both visitors and Southampton residents alike.

I certainly don't think we need any more shops. What about the added possibility of designing a park which can provide space for various activities, for example street entertainers - this could be our chance to be innovative.
