HOW I agree with the letter from Rushington Resident (August 16).

Totton has lost a lot of its character, along with many small shops during the last few years. The death knell was putting a large supermarket in the town centre. There are now many things one can't purchase in Totton and so people are forced to shop elsewhere.

As a born and bred Tottonian, I feel the changes have been mostly for the worse. True, we have a lovely library, civic centre and are well catered for doctors' surgeries, but now that Rumbridge Street has lost virtually all its retail outlets and becomes increasingly run-down, residents in Hounsdown and Rushington need at least a reliable and frequent bus service to get them to what is now, unfortunately, the heart of Totton. For those who drive, adequate parking is essential so reducing car spaces seems ludicrous.

Finding out what local people need is surely the first step to take before any more changes are made.

CONCERNED TOTTONIAN.
