I HAD a day off work and my daughter said she would like to treat me and my other daughter to a swim at The Quays, in Southampton.

"Let's leave the car at home and use the bus, to save the environment,'' she said.

Good idea, so off we went to Shirley High Street where we got a bus. To my utter amazement the fare for one adult and two children (aged six and nine) was £3.40 to go 2.2 miles.

As this was my eldest daughter's money from her birthday that was a total of £6.80 return.

After we came out of the swimming baths (great fun), my daughter with some surprise said, "Have I got to give the man on the bus another £3.40?'' "Yes,'' I said.

"Next time let's just take the car,'' she said.

I had to agree with her, it would have been cheaper.

Where is the sense in this - a nine-year-old girl wants to save the environment but what is the incentive.
