I AM inclined to agree that building one rather small object such as laser lights or a brightly painted Itchen Bridge etc will do nothing for Southampton's wow factor, all that will happen is that a visitor will give it a casual glance and walk away quickly forgotten about.
It's what a tourist perceives of a city in general, such as shops, buildings, parks etc, that determines whether they will like this city or not.
The best way to impress someone would be to rebuild the pier at the bottom of the High Street, allowing visitors to have a panoramic view of Southampton Water, also to include a car park and a nice café and pleasure boats giving trips round the docks, like it used to be.
Having said this I am not ruling out R J Mitchell and his Spitfire which is another matter which this council should have done something about years ago.
