THE Army has a new regiment brought about by the merger of the Staffordshire, Cheshire, Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters regiments. This regiment has been given the name of the Mercian Regiment.
When the Dorset and Devon, Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Sussex Regiments were merged the new regiment was named the Rifles.
At the time of the earlier merger the Wessex Society made representation to the Ministry for Defence asking for "Wessex" to be included in the title. We have to ask why Wessex has been treated differently.
T R SPRATT, assistant secretary, The Wessex Society.
