IT is most refreshing that the former Labour Europe minister Keith Vaz is calling for a referendum on the proposed treaty to be held at the time of the next general election, which is generally accepted will be called this autumn.
However, Gordon Brown might well find it more beneficial, for his premiership to delay calling an early general election. In which case the UK will have become a signatory to the new treaty/constitution.
Moreover, unrestricted migration from other EU member states and possibly, at a later date from Turkey, will continue to escalate. EU member states' population can move unrestricted across other member states' borders.
What Mr Vaz should have called for is a referendum at the time of the next election, to determine whether the UK electorate wish to stay in the EU.
The democratic solution is simple - let the people decide!
