SOUTHAMPTON councillors consider themselves worthy of massive pay increases.
For the last two decades at least we have had many heads of department, now called Cabinet members, who wield extraordinary powers and exercise huge control over enormous budgets.
Some decisions have resulted in great financial loss to those people and businesses who pay council tax and are then subsequently required to cover the shortfall by over inflation increases in the council tax.
It is now time to examine the quality and qualification of those who represent us as councillors, to ascertain whether they are fit for purpose and not just in council as a status symbol with attendant expenses and allowances.
I suggest that said qualifying merits be published in the Daily Echo for the electors to decide in future elections.
