RALPH Prospero has an issue about the memorial in Southampton for the four local men who died fighting against fascism during the Spanish Civil War (Letters, September 5).

Contrary to what Mr Prospero thinks, not all volunteers were card-carrying members of the Communist party. Working men and women who were opposed to fascism and the danger from German and Italian support for General Franco went to Spain to help the democratically elected republican government.

Not all fought in the International Brigade's; some such as George Orwell joined workers militias that were later absorbed into the popular army others worked as doctors and nurses.

Opponents of the brigades and other volunteers always claim that they were reds or mercenaries, they were not in it for the money.

If being opposed to fascism makes one a communist, I hope that there are lots of communists in the UK.
