JUDGING by teacher Glyn Oliver's remarks about the armed forces (Letters, April 11), he is the sort of person who makes people's feet itch for a clear run at the seat of his trousers.

At a time when the lives of our service personnel are at risk daily, Mr Oliver likens them to violent teenagers going around the world subjugating people and generally beating them up in order to control their resources.

Thus he follows on in the wake of the National Union of Teachers whose revolutionary militants recently voted to forbid military officers giving careers advice in schools because they would glorify war. That is on top of the decision the Labour Government made last year to abolish the Defence Schools Presentation Team.

Why are lawyers, accountants and doctors allowed to promote their professions in schools, but soldiers are not allowed to talk about defending our country?

Heaven help us if Mr Oliver's views are representative of what is going on in schools. One day he may come to regret his disgraceful remarks, especially if this country is placed in harm's way and we look to the armed services for protection.
