THE reports and editorial (Daily Echo, April 7) on pensioners' bus passes are not entirely fair to Wilts & Dorset.
The notices currently in Southampton buses state that, pending the issue of new passes, the old Southampton City passes are now valid on the whole length of any route coming into Southampton. The notices do not state that the passes are valid on routes which do not enter the city.
The editorial states that "They Wilts & Dorset also know that anyone issued with an existing bus pass must have reached the required age''. Whoever wrote that has never closely examined bus passes issued by Southampton Council. The passes are smartcards, but whoever designed them was not smart enough to put any wording on them indicating that they are bus passes.
Bus drivers who work within or into Southampton should be familiar with the passes, but a driver on a route which does not enter the city may never have seen one before. So how are they expected to know that such an anonymous card has been issued for bus travel rather than for some other purpose?
