THE Daily Echo's report on the car theft gang (April 10) was puzzling and a little disturbing - and not simply because of the actions of the gang.

First, there is the notion that I must hide my car keys in my house in case someone should break in to steal them.

If thieves are that determined, the car can look after itself. I'd be more concerned that, thwarted in their quest for keys, they don't beat my brains out and make off with priceless heirlooms.

Second, among the advice on how to "protect your vehicle'', the article stated "Make sure door keys are placed discreetly so that they can be used in an emergency to get out of the house.'' The more I think about this the less sense it makes.

Finally, a Southampton detective is quoted as saying "The fact that the car was travelling north on the M3 when they made their getaway suggests these people are based out of the county. We hope they will not return to Hampshire again.'' Honestly, talk about out of sight, out of mind!
