Recently I made arrangements to have a BT line into my house and cancel Virgin. Days later I rang BT to confirm the date for connection.

I was bewildered to hear it had been cancelled as I hadn't paid the £25. Apparently this is what they charge to have to have a credit rating checked. This was a surprise to me as I had not been told about this.

I was told I could proceed with the changeover if I paid by my debit card at that time, which I did. What a shambles this is.
