I NOTE with sadness that the last surviving original building, currently called Bar Coda, in Canal Walk, Southampton, is being demolished.
From Kelly's Directories I have found that in 1907 it was the Lord Roberts pub and Henry Rogers was the licensee for 40 years until 1946 when it was taken over by Mrs E V Haddon.
In 1954 Samuel George Salway was the licensee and by 1960 M V Sexton. As far as I know it was called the Lord Roberts until recent years when the fad for changing pub names into something trendy became the norm, thus losing all contact with its past.
Canal Walk was once a bustling part of the community, and I have noted since researching Southampton's history via its buildings, that what the Luftwaffe were unable to destroy.
Southampton City Council are always prepared to approve demolition and lose yet more of our architectural heritage.
JOSEPH PAGLIA, Lordswood, Southampton.
