WHILST very much regretting the demise of the Woolworth chain and having considerable sympathy for the unfortunate, redundant staff at this difficult time, it is to be hoped that some benefit may ensue in this area. I refer to the now-vacant premises in Shirley High Street: What the district centre badly needs is a supermarket to offset the monopoly currently enjoyed by Sainsbury’s in the precinct. (I am aware of the existence of Lidl and Tesco Express in Shirley Road, but neither is convenient to local shoppers, not to everyone's taste).
Assuming that Iceland will not relocate, I would suggest that Morrisons would be the ideal choice for the venue – sadly missed since leaving Portswood and the Calmore site is too inaccessible for regular/daily shopping. Renowned for both choice and competitive pricing, M would bridge the gap decisively. What we do not need is another charity shop, betting shop or discounted general goods store.
